My three year old daughter and I set off on a special road trip together up I90 to the Berkshires. After a gorgeous ride through the mountains we landed at the bakery in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Berkshire Mountain Bakery’s new sit down location. They have a case full of beautiful freshly baked breads (including gluten-free breads), sandwiches and salads, and sourdough crust pizzas fresh out of the oven. One their pizzas options on the menu is a vegan pizza with marinara, tomatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, red onions and pine nuts. Let me just tell you right now, it is divine.

Seasoned Vegan
March 82016

One of the attractions of Seasoned Vegan was that it is owned by a mother and son duo, Brenda and Aarin Beener, who describe their food as “gourmet vegan soul food.” We set our GPS straight from Albany to Seasoned Vegan and off we went. I was super impressed, and knew we had chosen the right place.

Cafe Berlin
March 82016

We decided to make another stop back in Old San Juan for a romantic dinner at Cafe Berlin. The menu has a huge selection of vegan and gluten-free possibilities, all criollo (traditional flavors) inspired, with exciting twists of taste.

One of our favorite bagel shops we run to is Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company, particularly the one on Broadway in Queens. It is not too far from the airport and very close to where Gaetano’s family live. I’m my most recent trip there I learned that they in fact do carry gluten-free bagels, and it was absolutely delicious!

Local Sprouts Cafe
November 242015

After a beautiful night of singing and dancing, our morning ritual is head to Portland, where we sit down at Local Sprouts Cafe and recap on our previous night of fun over a plate of the most delicious local food. I remember the excitement I felt the first day I walked into this cooperatively run cafe, and saw a menu full of vegan and gluten-free options and a map on the wall which indicated all the places in Maine from which their food derived. As a mom, I was glad to see that they had a large children’s area full of toys. And as a musician, I was happy to see their beautiful stage and full piano situated near the front window.

Klunkerkranich
November 242015

We curiously walked into the mall where Klunkerkranich’s address led us to, and into an elevator to the 5th floor. The elevator let us out into a parking lot, which we walked through to the very top, and were in complete awe of what we found. It was a gorgeous rooftop garden full of people, music, food, drinks, art, plants, and the most gorgeous view of the city!

Let It Be
November 242015

Berlin is a vegan haven, full of food options around every corner. And it just so happened that not too far from our venue was a vegan creperie called Let It Be. Looking at the menu was very excited, filled with vegan crepes, burgers and sandwiches, as well as breakfast and desert options. We were also excited about the dishes named after many artists we like, such as the Erykah Badu, the Woody Harrelson or the Joan Jett. Since I am gluten-free these days, I ordered the Johnny Marr, with gluten-free bread, caramelized tofu, apple, walnuts and chutney. My son also begged us to order their mac n cheese side. All four orders were outstanding and incredibly filling.

The Temple Bar
September 132015

We even found a bar with live traditional Irish music, The Temple Bar Pub, that allowed us to have our children there until 9:30pm. It just so happened that we walked in on a night when an amazing group called Ladlane was performing, and they were incredible. It felt like something out of a dream as we held our Guinness and Irish cider enjoyed this amazing music while our children colored with joy at the table. Ireland definitely captured my heart that night. Read more…

We were all dazzled by the opportunity to have a vegan Irish breakfast, which included two homemade vegetarian sausages, roasted chili mushrooms, breakfast beans and roasted red onion with fresh herbs or roasted tomatoes. The sausage was homemade, and very different from other kinds I have tried. It tasted fresh, rather that processed, with a sesame seed crispy texture on the outside, and soft texture on the inside. It was incredibly filling and a great way to get a sense of Irish cuisine for a vegan. The also had a number of delicious vegan and gluten-free baked goods, granola, and delicious soy lattes. It was definitely the best vegan option we found during our stay in Dublin. Read more...

Joe’s Garage
September 132015

Another social center cafe we performed at in the Netherlands was Joe’s Garagein Amsterdam. Joe’s Garage is a small cafe space on the inside with a beautiful spacious eating space outside. The food was excellent, and perfectly filled our bellies for a very warm and intimate performance. I highly recommend reading a beautiful blog post by Andrea Anderson for a great description of the cafe and the night from an audience member’s perspective. For me, it felt like walking into a family dinner, feeling like a stranger at first, and then part of the family by the end of the night. In fact, this is how it felt at almost every venue we visited in Europe. I look forward to another family dinner with them again soon. Read more…

Vrankrijk
September 132015

Right after our show in Den Bosch we took the train straight back to Amsterdam to perform at a squatted venue and bar called Vrankrijk. We were performing on one of their weekly Wednesday queer nights,  and the place was already packed and bumping.  The crowd was ready to dance when we hit the stage. This was definitely one of my favorite performances of the tour. Apparently, they serve dinner on Wednesday nights before the music starts, but we missed it. I can only testify to the fun atmosphere full of warm faces and excellent dancing. Read more…

Knoflook
September 132015

While on tour in the Netherlands, we performed at another social center and vegan cafe called Knoflook (which means garlic in Dutch) in the city of Den Bosch. The day we performed was not their regular cafe day, which is usually on Fridays at 6:30pm. However, our host who usually helps cooks the food for the cafe made us the most delicious spinach soup, with fresh chopped cilantro to sprinkle on top, and fresh bread for dipping. I highly recommend stopping by if his cooking is a sign of what the regular cafe day is like. Read more…

The Green Bean Cafe
January 132015

This last winter vacation in Western Mass we also discovered a popular brunch spot with fabulous vegan options called The Green Bean Cafe. We went on a Sunday morning, which meant a wait of about 30 minutes, but we found it to be well worth it. First of all, I haven’t seen a vegan corn cake at restaurant since I was last in Portland, OR at The Paradox Cafe. This place might make them just as good, if not better, and the are wheat-free! Gaetano and Yabisi ordered their favorite brunch item, tofu scramble, which is called “tofu delight” here, plus veggie sausage and biscuits smothered in an almond butter gravy. Yep, we left super full and happy. Read more…
